Never Let Me Go is a 2005 novel written by acclaimed Japanese British author Kazuo Ishiguro. It was shortlisted for the 2005 Booker Prize, and was included on Time Magazine's 100 Best English-Language Novels from 1923 to 2005.
The setting of this story takes place in a dystopian British society which is revealed gradually throughout the novel. Kathy H, a young woman who spent her childhood in an unusual boarding school known as Hailsham, comes back into contact with two of her friends from Hailsham, to discover the dark secrets buried in their communal past that had been hidden from them throughout their formative years.
A film adaptation starring Keira Knightly is scheduled to be released in October 2010, so let's read and discuss this book before the movie comes out!
so far I've got suggestions for Three Cups of Tea, The Kite Runner, A Thousand Splendid Suns, and The Piano Teacher.
Lisa See's Snow Flower and the Secret Fan? Jhumpa Lahiri's The Namesake?
The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, La Sombra del Viento (The Shadow of the Wind), IQ84, The Story of a Shipwrecked Sailor could be good reads.
I've wanted to read Jhumpa Lahiri's Interpreter of Maladies for awhile now
I have read Three Cups of Tea and the Namesake. The group would probably enjoy a discussion about either of these books. I second Makiko's choice of the Brief Wonderous Life of Oscar Wao. That is a book I have wanted to read for a while. Let's make a choice soon.
Hey, it's been awhile. Let's pick a title so we can start reading.
Hi Viola, it was nice meeting you! I agree, either 1. we should vote or 2. someone should choose for the group. I'm fine with either!
I'm leaning toward the Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao (seem to have three votes for that), and then Interpreter of Maladies for the one after. I'll set up the event as soon as JT gets back to me. Let's start Oscar Wao in the meantime if you want to get a head start!
Anyone interested in seeing the movie this week/weekend?
Great discussion this past week! Any book discussions please feel free to place them on this board.
